Fenian Sympathizer

Post by Karen on Sat 27 Feb 2010 - 14:47

Francis Tumblety died at St. John's Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 27, 1903. His will was disputed by his relatives in Rochester, New York, however by January 12, 1908 his will was upheld. These bequests are contained in the will:

* Cardinal Gibbons $10,000

* Archbishop Ireland $10,000

Now, let's take a closer look at these two men of the cloth, shall we:

In a book entitled, "Making The Irish American", by Joseph Lee and Marion R. Casey, 2006, it is there stated:

"Cardinals Gibbons and O'Connell, Archbishop Patrick J. Hayes of New York, and many other American bishops gave strong endorsement to Sinn Fien's struggle for Irish independence. John Devoy, the veteran Fenian leader, could hardly believe the change of attitude on the part of the clergy since the days when, he said, "we were cursed from nearly every altar in Ireland."

So just why did Francis Tumblety, an Irish-American rebel and wanderer, leave Cardinal Gibbons, a Fenian sympathizer $10,000?

Francis Tumblety was not arrested for the Whitechapel Murders when Scotland Yard pursued him to New York, yet they continued to keep an eye on him, monitoring his activities. Could this be because Tumblety had ties to the Fenians? I don't think this man was Jack the Ripper at all. Tumblety was also 6 feet and 4 inches tall!! The witnesses all stated that the men that they saw the victims with just moments prior to their deaths was approximately 5'7'' or 5'8'' tall.
