Newest Claim on Tumblety

Post by Karen on Thu 30 May 2013 - 10:28

Was Jack the Ripper really from Cavan? (Unfortunately for her, No)

http://www.anglocelt.ie/news/inthepaper/articles/2013/05/29/4016074-was-jack-the-ripper-really-from-cavan/

A Ripper researcher has just gone to the press in respect of her researches on Dr. Francis Tumblety. There are many flaws with her information, and here are a few to start with:

- She claims that Tumblety was born in Ireland, despite the fact gleaned through my research on the Indian Herb Doctor that he was born in Belleville, Ontario, from which he then left for Rochester, New York.

- Police witnesses and civilian witnesses described the man last seen with the victims as being of short stature (listed as 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 8 inches) and Dr. Tumblety was 6 foot 4 inches which I also discovered through a newspaper article on the "doctor."

- Dr. Tumblety would have been in his mid to late 50's during the Ripper's reign of terror in the Whitechapel slums and the Ripper was described as being in his 20's or 30's (40 at the latest.)

- The old "Herb Doctor" was in prison on November 9th and would not have been available for the murder of Mary Jane Kelly.

- My research in the forum devoted to Francis Tumblety led me to the belief that he was a police informant on Fenian matters and not a police suspect for the Ripper crimes.

- And most important of all, the family (which he did have in Ireland) was from County Roscommon and not County Cavan or County Fermanagh.

I don't know what her researches in Ireland will afford her but it doesn't seem promising.

I was just checking a google map of the area near Whitby and found Enniskillen, which is a very small town northeast of Whitby. Enniskillen is an area in which this researcher mentioned in her article found in the Irish newspaper:

Apparently, Francis Tumblety wrote a book in 1850 and one in 1866, and both can be found at the Toronto Public Library:

Guide to the afflicted, containing at a glance the most common symptoms of certain diseases which arise from the abuse of the genital organs or contagion, together with the means of relief, being the result of great research and study.
By: Tumblety, F.
Year/Format: 1850, Book

A few passages in the life of Dr. Francis Tumblety,; the Indian herb doctor, including his experience in the old capitol prison, to which he was consigned, with a wanton disregard to justice and liberty. By order of Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War. Also journalistic and documentary vindication of his name and fame, and professional testimonials respectfully inscribed to the American public.

Another place name mentioned in Miss Mulcahy's article is Cavan. Well, as luck would have it, there was a small town named Cavan just northeast of Enniskillen, Ontario and the Enniskillen Conservation Area:

VERDICT OF MANSLAUGHTER AGAINST DR. TUMBLETY. - We cut the following from the St. John, N.B. Globe of the 20th ultimo: -

INQUEST. - A coroner's inquest was held in the Court House yesterday (Friday) under the following circumstances. Mr. James Portmore died rather suddenly on Tuesday last. He had been for a short time previous to his death under the treatment of Dr. Tumblety, and suspicions were aroused that it was in consequence of the medicine he had been taking that caused his death. Accordingly the Coroner took the matter into hand, and after a searching investigation the jury returned a verdict of "Manslaughter," and every exertion will be made to obtain the arrest of Tumblety, who fled on Thursday night, on horseback, going by the way of St. Andrew's road. His clerk was examined, and in the course of his testimony he said that Tumblety told him that he intended reaching Calais that night, and upon being questioned closely he said he had suspicions that he fled in consequence of learning that the causes which led to the death of Mr. Portmore were to be investigated.
