Author Sabotage Against Lord Curzon

Post by Karen on Mon 29 Apr 2013 - 6:23

An after-dinner story of a suppressed literary masterpiece has been humorously confided by Lord Curzon to the Society of Authors. About eight years ago he wrote an elaborate book on India. It was printed, illustrated, and on the point of being issued when he incautiously mentioned its existence, with the enthusiasm of a fond parent, to his chief at the Foreign Office, who had just appointed him to the Viceroyship of India. Lord Salisbury promptly vetoed it - strangled the infant in its cradle, so to speak. He said no Viceroy ought to do anything so indecent as to bring out a book on the country he was going to rule over. Nor did he think the suppressed work should be permitted to see the light even after the close of Lord Curzon's term of office. So that was the end of it. The contract with the publisher was torn up, the bill paid, and the book burned.
