John O'Brien

Post by Karen on Tue 19 Jul 2011 - 18:50

I don't know if this is Mary Jane O'Brien's brother, John or Johnto who was in the Army:

Yesterday morning at a few minutes past six o'clock a man was discovered lying in a comatose state in Gordon-street, Clapham-road by some persons who were proceeding to their work. He was conveyed to a local surgery, when it was ascertained that the man had swallowed a quantity of poison; an emetic was given him, but not having the desired effect, it was deemed advisable to have the would-be-suicide removed to the nearest hospital. Chalk was then administered, and it had the desired result. It was then ascertained that his name was John O'Brien, aged 26 years. He stated that he was a deserter from the Royal Artillery, and that his father resided at 16, Thomas-street, Dublin. It is not known where he procured the oxalic acid with which he attempted to destroy his life.
